The Demon Trapper's Daughter (Demon Trappers #1) By: Jana Oliver

Title: The Demon Trapper's Daughter (Demon Trappers #1)
Author: Jana Oliver
Published: February 7th, 2001
My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Good reads Summary:

Riley Blackthorne just needs a chance to prove herself—and that’s exactly what the demons are counting on...

Seventeen-year-old Riley, the only daughter of legendary Demon Trapper, Paul Blackthorne, has always dreamed of following in her father's footsteps. The good news is, with human society seriously disrupted by economic upheaval and Lucifer increasing the number of demons in all major cities, Atlanta’s local Trappers’ Guild needs all the help they can get—even from a girl. When she’s not keeping up with her homework or trying to manage her growing crush on fellow apprentice, Simon, Riley’s out saving distressed citizens from foul-mouthed little devils – Grade One Hellspawn only, of course, per the strict rules of the Guild. Life’s about as normal as can be for the average demon-trapping teen.

But then a Grade Five Geo-Fiend crashes Riley’s routine assignment at a library, jeopardizing her life and her chosen livelihood. And, as if that wasn’t bad enough, sudden tragedy strikes the Trappers’ Guild, spinning Riley down a more dangerous path than she ever could have imagined. As her whole world crashes down around her, who can Riley trust with her heart—and her life?

My Thoughts:

This is the beginning of a great series, I am so mad that I haven't started this one sooner, although now I don't have to have an agonizing wait to read the next book! I really enjoyed this one, it had action, adventure, myth, and intrigue the makings of an awesome read. There was nothing about this book that bored me one bit, I just kept reading and finished it almost too fast, when I finished reading I was up and ready to get the next book.

Riley Blackthorne wants to be a great demon trapper just like her dad, as the book begins she is doing one of her first solo traps which does not goes as well as she would have liked. She just wants to prove that just because she is a girl does not mean that she is any less of a trapper.

I loved Riley's character she was a strong kick butt heroine that you always wanted to root for, she was snarky and awesome, I loved reading about her and I really enjoyed her interactions with all of the characters of the book. The aspect of demon trapping was so cool, I loved learning about how they trapped the demons and what it took to do it. It had some fun and interesting magical aspects of it that I hadn't read before that made the book even better to read. Riley didn't get along with many girls so one of the most interesting aspects of this book that was besides Riley she is mainly the only female character that you read about. Her father's partner Denver, I can't recall his real name now just his nickname lol  was an interesting character that we end up learning a lot about. He seemed torn between having feelings for Riley and also wanting to be more of a big brother to her. I can't wait to see if this is explored in the later books.

Overall, this book was an awesome start to a series and I am so glad that I finally started it and I cannot wait to continue. Anyone who enjoys paranormal and action and adventure will love this one.  Have you guys started this series yet? Let me know!

Review: I Hunt Killers By: Barry Lyga (Jasper Dent #1)

Title: I Hunt Killers (Jasper Dent #1)
Author: Barry Lyga
Published:  April 3rd, 2012
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:
What if the world's worst serial killer...was your dad?

Jasper "Jazz" Dent is a likable teenager. A charmer, one might say.

But he's also the son of the world's most infamous serial killer, and for Dear Old Dad, Take Your Son to Work Day was year-round. Jazz has witnessed crime scenes the way cops wish they could—from the criminal's point of view.

And now bodies are piling up in Lobo's Nod.

In an effort to clear his name, Jazz joins the police in a hunt for a new serial killer. But Jazz has a secret—could he be more like his father than anyone knows?

My Thoughts:

This book was dark, dangerous, creepy, and completely awesome! I am a huge fan of the t.v. show Dexter, and this was like the YA version, sort of. Barry Lyga has created a complex and layered character, that kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages the whole entire time!

Jasper Dent is the son of one of the most norotrious serial killers in history, and Jasper is just trying to be a normal teenager and live a normal life. But, growing up his dad taught him all about what he is doing, Jazz is always questioning himself and wondering if he is a sociopath and killer like his father.  Everything changes the day a body is found in Jazz's hometown of Lobos Nod, he is convinced it is a serial killer and he knows it from first hand experience. Now, he just has to convince the cops that he is right and convince himself that he is a normal teenager.

Being in Jazz's head was so interesting and I loved his narration. Jazz wants more than anything to be normal, but even he can't answer his own questions. Is he destined to  become just like his father because of the way he grew up or is he just paranoid about himself. As the reader even though you are in his head, you never know for sure about Jazz and the whole serial thing was creepy and kept me reading late into the night.

Overall,  this book was just plain awesome and creepy in a good way. It kept me wondering and interested, it made me think, about whether or not growing up as a parent for a serial killer would make you the same way, or not. Have you guys read this one? Let me know in the comments!

Review: Hex Hall (Hex Hall #1)

Title: Hex Hall ( Hex Hall #1)
Author: Rachel Hawkins
Published: March 2nd, 2010
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.
My Thoughts:

I was really looking forward to reading this one, so many people love this series and I had wanted to read this for such a long time. I am sorry to say that while I didn't hate this book, it didn't live up to my expectations.

Sophie Mercer is a witch, sentenced by the council to go to school at Hex Hall with her fellow punished Prodigium.  She doesn't know much about being a witch. Her mother is human and her father is a warlock, who she has never met. Going to a reform school full of witches, werewolves, and faeries is something new for Sophie and she doesn't know what to expect.

I don't know what it was about this book that I just didn't connect completely with, because there wasn't anything that I hated about it but, there also wasn't anything that I loved. One reason I think I didn't fall in love with this book was written for more middle grade at least in my opinion.  Normally this doesn't bother me but, for some reason it did. But, some of the positives of this one is that it made me smile, it was a great story for a younger middle grade reader. I also enjoyed her friendship with her roommate Jenna, a vampire.

Overall, this book was a fun read but, maybe just too young for me. Sophie was a strong protagonist and she was ready for anything, definitely the main character type that I love. I recommend this book for younger readers and it is definitely great for a first time paranormal reader. I know I have many readers out there who love these books so, tell me your thoughts and opinions.

Review: Tempestuous(Twisted Lit #1) By: Kim Askew

Tempestuous (Twisted Lit #1)
Author: Kim Askew and Amy Helmes
Published: December 18th, 2012
My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Goodreads Summary:

Recently banished, unfairly, by the school’s popular crowd, former “it girl,” Miranda Prospero, finds herself in a brave new world: holding dominion amongst a rag-tag crew of geeks and misfits where she works at the Hot-Dog Kabob in the food court of her local mall. When the worst winter storm of the season causes mall workers and last-minute shoppers to be snowed-in for the night, Miranda seizes the opportunity to get revenge against the catty clique behind her social exile. With help from her delightfully dweeby coworker, Ariel, and a sullen loner named Caleb who works at the mall’s nearby gaming and magic shop, Miranda uses charm and trickery to set things to right during this spirited take on Shakespeare’s The Tempest.
My Thoughts:

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for review.

I really enjoyed this book, it was short and sweet yet it was packed with so much plot that kept me entertained throughout the entire thing. I have to be honest but, I haven't read The Tempest since high school and I really didn't pay much attention to the plot, wish I did now though. Our main character is named Miranda Prospero, which is right out of Shakespeare's play.
Miranda has fallen from grace at her private high school, after a cheating scandal has left her fellow student's  futures in ruins, she is blamed for the entire thing and is shunned by everyone in her school including her former boyfriend and best friends. To make up for her discretion she is sentenced to work at the food court in the mall, to pay back the money she had earned because of what happened. One night while working, a blizzard hits and Miranda, her fellow mall co-workers, and many students from her school are snowed in at the mall overnight. Full of pranks and fun, this book was a teenage dream.

Miranda was a great character, she was strong in the face of everything she is going through. Pretty much every single person in her school hates her because of what happened and they aren't afraid to show it. She keeps everything together and she is definitely diabolical but, in a good way. Miranda was great at helping people, many of her co-workers came to her for help and advice, how to solve a problem, they counted on her for help. Like I said above this book was a quick read but, it was full of much action. I never knew so many crazy things could happen in one night by teenagers.

Impromptu concerts, dance parties, and robberies, are only a few of the crazy things that happen in the mall full of teenagers overnight. I wish they had awesome books like this out when I was in high school, it would have been so much fun to read this type of book and talk about how it related to the tempest by Shakespeare and I really think it would have engaged me. Overall, this book was a great read for someone who enjoys a contemporary read, it reminded me of the fun of an Ally Carter book and I enjoyed every second of it. Have you guys read The Tempest By: Shakespeare? fill me in and maybe I can find some more interesting connections to it!

My 3 choices for this week are:

Nobody But Us By: Kristin Halbrook
Goodreads Summary:

Bonnie and Clyde meets IF I STAY in this addictively heart-wrenching story of two desperate teenagers on the run from their pasts.

They’re young. They’re in love. They’re on the run.

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Nobody But Us, told in alternating perspectives from Will and Zoe, is an unflinching novel, in turns heartbreaking and hopeful, about survival, choices, and love...and how having love doesn’t always mean that you get a happy ending. Described as “beautiful, heartbreaking, and exhilarating” by Kody Keplinger, author of The DUFF, Nobody But Us will prove irresistible to fans of Nina Lacour, Jenny Han, and Sara Zarr

The Madman's Daughter (The Madman's Daughter #1) By: Megan Shepherd
Goodreads Summary:

In the darkest places, even love is deadly.

Sixteen-year-old Juliet Moreau has built a life for herself in London—working as a maid, attending church on Sundays, and trying not to think about the scandal that ruined her life. After all, no one ever proved the rumors about her father's gruesome experiments. But when she learns he is alive and continuing his work on a remote tropical island, she is determined to find out if the accusations are true.

Accompanied by her father's handsome young assistant, Montgomery, and an enigmatic castaway, Edward—both of whom she is deeply drawn to—Juliet travels to the island, only to discover the depths of her father's madness: He has experimented on animals so that they resemble, speak, and behave as humans. And worse, one of the creatures has turned violent and is killing the island's inhabitants. Torn between horror and scientific curiosity, Juliet knows she must end her father's dangerous experiments and escape her jungle prison before it's too late. Yet as the island falls into chaos, she discovers the extent of her father's genius—and madness—in her own blood.

Inspired by H. G. Wells's classic The Island of Dr. Moreau, The Madman's Daughter is a dark and breathless Gothic thriller about the secrets we'll do anything to know and the truths we'll go to any lengths to protect.
